Directions for Use

Use kit within 1 year from the date of purchase. 

  1. Collect
    The gut health test kit includes everything you’ll need to collect a small sample of your dog’s stool, including detailed instructions. 

    For best results, we recommend discontinuing probiotics for 24 hours before collecting a sample.
  2. Register
    Create an account at app.animalbiome.com, complete your dog’s profile, and enter the six-character ID code listed on your instruction card.
  3. Send
    The kit includes a pre-addressed mailer with prepaid postage in the US for use when sending back your sample.
  4. Analysis
    Using the latest scientific innovations and techniques,  AnimalBiome’s scientists identify the types and proportions of the bacteria found in your dog’s sample and prepare your dog’s unique report. 
  5. Results
    In about 2-3 weeks (from when we receive your sample), you will receive an email notification when your test results are ready. Access your dog’s report via our online Pet Portal.

This product gave me the real reason my dog had chronic diarrhea

My dog Piper had been sick for about a year. She had a terrible diarrhea problem that was determined by her specialist, to be irritable bowel syndrome. We were treating her for that, but nothing was working. Multiple blood panels, 4 fecal transplants and prescription food, but that didn't help. She had lost a lot of weight and I thought we might lose her. A friend suggested we try AnimalBiome and I ordered the Gut Health Test and a couple of gut treatments they recommended. The biome test came back showing she did not have IBS, she had a food allergy. We began cooking her food ourselves and within 2 days, she went from liquid stool, to firm and normal. We added in the Gut Health S boulardii + FOS for Cats and Dogs Probiotic Prebiotic.
We are happy to say that she is still solid after 2 months of this protocol. We are very grateful to AnimalBiome for their products, and the support they provided to us. If your animal has chronic diarrhea I would highly recommend you investigate further and get the biome test.

Finally, we have some answers

Our 10-year-old Alaskan Klee Kai was diagnosed with IBD about 3 years ago, and had been pretty stable with his daliy medication up until July of 2024; he came back from boarding one weekend unable to tolerate his food. After on-and-off diarrhea for about 5 months, multiple rounds of metronidozale, several food changes with no improvement, negative x-rays, fecal exam, blood panel, and urinalysis, and even a trip to the emergency vet, we still had no answers. A fellow AKK owner encouarged me to check out Animal Biome products, and I figured I'd start with a microbiome test to know exactly what we were dealing with and how best to treat him. His results were shocking - he had ZERO bacteria of any kind, good or bad. The antibiotics had completely wiped out his gut flora except for e. coli which was off the charts. A normal e-coli range is 0-5; his was 99.5. The test showed that the extremely high e.coli number was likely inflaming his gut causing the chronic diarrhea, and because he has no healthy bacteria he couldn't process any normal dog food. We've been treating him with GMP and are starting the Gut Restore soon per our consultant's recommendation, and he's been doing great so far. I am incredibly thankful for the insight this test provided and am very hopeful we will get him back on regular food again after his treatment is completed. I will also make it a semi-annual routine to do another microbiome test to make sure he is staying on track.

What is fecal microbiome testing, and what are the benefits?

Fecal microbiome testing is the process of sequencing bacterial DNA material from a small fecal sample. We can detect and identify the bacteria from your dog’s stool sample and then provide you with a comprehensive report.

Testing a dog’s microbiome provides insights into their health. Then imbalances in specific gut bacteria can be addressed to help alleviate such symptoms as diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, and itchy skin that may be associated with some chronic health conditions.

Will my sample be safe in the mail?

Yes, your sample is safe. The sample tubes contain a special liquid that keeps the bacteria perfectly preserved for analysis, across a very wide range of temperatures. Once inside the tube, the sample is safe for several months.

How long does it take to get my dog’s test results?

Reports are typically available within two weeks from when the sample arrives at our laboratory.
