Got Pet Poop? Company Wants to Buy Waste for Research, Transplants
In 2014, the tiny “seed” that grew into AnimalBiome, a company and creator of microbiome-based diagnostics and therapeutics for dogs and cats, was planted in the gut of a dog name Yuki. Holly Ganz, the founder and chief science officer of Oakland-based AnimalBiome (animalbiome.com), was at the time in graduate school at UC Davis, on her way to a career as a microbial ecologist and unknowingly on the cusp of a radical turn to become an entrepreneur. In an interview, Ganz spoke of Yuki, the rescue herding dog that had developed hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, a disorder in dogs that causes vomiting and bloody diarrhea, among other symptoms.

Throwing away your pet’s poop is a courteous thing to do – but it could be costing you hundreds of dollars. AnimalBiome, a biotechnology company based in Oakland, Calif., offers $100 per month to pet owners who provide their pets’ poop through the company’s stool bank donor program. The company uses stools from healthy pets both for its own research into the gut microbiomes of cats and dogs and as fecal transplant material for sick pets that may be suffering from illnesses like diarrhea, itchy skin, allergies and bad breath.

Oakland-based startup AnimalBiome has made a public call for poop. In a new collaboration, Green Juju and AnimalBiome are seeking to highlight the benefits fresh, plant-based nutrition can have on a dog’s microbiome and gut health through the Green Juju Microbiome Challenge. According to the companies, research has shown the benefits of fresh, plant-based nutrition, particularly plant-based fiber, on gut microbiome diversity and function. An increased intake of fiber has also been shown to help reduce risk for inflammatory diseases, digestive, skin and other health issues, according to Green Juju and AnimalBiome.

You could be throwing away hundreds of dollars. AnimalBiome, an Oakland biotech startup, is calling on East Bay residents to donate their healthy dog and cat’s poop to the company’s stool bank, according to a release on Wednesday. The business uses the feces to aid ailing cats and dogs suffering from microbiome imbalances in the gut, which could contribute to malady’s like diarrhea, itchy skin, allergies, and bad breath. The company uses the waste both for its research and to make fecal microbiota transplant material.

Although this subject has been investigated previously in two published studies, their value is limited since both relied on examination of just two adult felines. The new study—published in Animals— is far more comprehensive, comprising 68 cats who experienced chronic vomiting, diarrhea, and/or constipation.
